Theyyam

Hightlights:

Theyyam is a spectacular ritual art of Kerala popular in the northern districts. Theyyam derives its name from the word Daivam, which means God.

In this art form, the dancer himself is conceived as the deity. Theyyam has its roots running deep in the tradition of hero worship. The folk element of Theyyam is very much evident in its costume, foot work and ritualistic vitality.

The costume of the Theyyam performer is captivating. It comprises of a large headgear and body decorations full of intricate and mystical designs

The essence of Theyyam is in the Manthra by its incremental repetition. It brings us a super temporal  feeling in spite of its inherent relationship with real life at its inception. The articulate creation of masks and gears from natural sources are intended to make unknowns to known and unattainable to real. The dancer recreates its mythical and ritualistic imagination and systematically delivers the right moods through his body posters. The performer of Theyyam gets himself completely into the artistic rhythm. Even when the dancer breaks coconut against his forehead, cuts his forehead with the sword, or wears red-hot iron chain on his body as a mark of self-torture, he never goes out of rhythm.

A variety of Theyyam performances will be featured in the festival. Some of the main Theyyams are Vayanattu Kulavan, Gulikan, Puliyoor Kannan, Kathivanoor Veeran, Chamundi, Vishnumoorthy etc.

Ananthapura Lake temple

 District:                      Kasaragod

 

 Highlights:

 The temple is located 5 Km from Kumbla, in the Kasargod District of Kerala State. The temple is in a beautiful lake, situate on a calm, tranquil and beautiful rocky hill. From the top of the hill the places around can be seen as a beautiful green natural scenery. The temple houses a beautiful of the deity of Sree Anantha Padmanabha Swamy seated on the Adi Sesha. This shrine is an ancient one with a known status from 6th century onwards. The shrine is having a prakaram (Chuttambalam) all around with walls like an enclosed veranda. The walls decorated with murals. There is a cave which ends in a pond. It is believed that the level of water in the pond will be at the same level at all seasons without increasing or decreasing. Near to the temple there is a rivulet known as papanasini. It is believed that the papanasini has the divine powers and will cleanse the souls by removing the sins. This temple has one of the best Koothambalams in Kerala. The shrine is supported by 30 granites and the floor is made by square granite blocks.

It is believed that there is crocodile in the temple. This is the main attraction and uniqueness of Kerala's only lake temple. The local call it as Babia and believe that the crocodile is there to guard the temple and the hidden treasure believed to be there in a cave in the lake. It is also believed that there will only one crocodile at any time. If one dies another mysteriously comes from somewhere. It eats the offerings of the temple given to it after the noon offerings. Another feature of the temple is that the original idol of the deity is made of a compound about 70 medicinal substances known as kadu sarkara yogam. This original idol is kept near the present one made of Pancha loha metal in 1972.

One unique feature of the Ananthapura Lake Temple is that any one from any religion, caste or creed is allowed here.

Anandasramam and Nityanandasramam Temple

District:                        Kasaragod

 

Highlights:

 Anandashramam, situated about eight Km east of the Kanhangad Railway Station, was founded in 1939 by Swami Ramdas, a great Vaishnava saint of modern times. The main asramam and other buildings have a beautiful setting in the midst of shady mango, coconut and other groves. There is a hill to the east of the asramam, to which the devotees retire for quiet meditation and from its west, the surrounding extensive landscape can be seen in its natural grandeur. The spot at the highest point of the hill is so fascinating that the devotees, who go up the hill and sit silently, are blessed with deep peace and tranquility.

The Nityanandasramam, which is situated on the hillock about half a Km south of the Hosdurg taluk office, was founded by Swami Nityanada. The spot was at first part of a forest area. Here Swami Nityananda constructed 45 guhas (caves) in a mountain slope. There is a temple built in 1963, after the style and design of the famous Somanatha Temple in Gujarat. A full size statue of Swami Nityananda in sitting posture made of panchaloha is one of the attractions of the asramam.

Bekal Beach

District:                   Kasaragod

Highlights:

The Bekal Fort& the attached Beach has been a source of attraction for historians, tourists and nature - lovers. The Fort happens to be the biggest for Kerala spreading over forty acres and the Fort appears to have been built up from the seas. The Hanuman temple and the ancient Muslime Mosque nearly hold testimony to the age-old religious harmony that prevailed in the area. The zigzag entrance and the trenches around the fort show the defense strategy connected with the fort.

Bekal Beach Situated at the northern tip of Kerala and is a beach destination of the future. It has long palm-fringed beaches and a rocky headland topped by the huge Bekal fort. This beach is being developed a resort. Tourists can enjoy the long cherished Bekal beach decorated with coconut trees. Historians can have the look on Bekal fort. The fort was built for fulfilling the defense requirements. The holes on the outer walls of the fort are so remarkable that they are specially designed to defined the fort effectively.

Kasargod, Locates Northern part of Kerala, offers a delightful experience for tourists. Chandragiri& Valiyaparamba are the main backwater spot in Kasaragod.

Chandragiri: It is located 4 Km away from Kasargod town. Kasargod Backwaters offer traditional houseboat cruises in& around the green coastal stretches of Chandragiri. You can enjoy the sight of palm groves while on a boat ride. You can catch a glimpse of the amazing fort at Chandragiri, built in the 17th century. The fort offers spectacular sunset views over the sea near Kasargod.

Bekal Beach: Bekal beach, is one of the exciting spot on backwater tourism at Kasaragod. The attractive palms decorated its coastal area& the fort gives a special excitement to touists. The famous Bekal fort holds historic moments& this fort area have 35 acres of land and occupies a prime position in the history of Kerala.The fort is constructed by Tippu Sultan during his tenure as a Sultan.
