Vadakkumnathan Temple

Highlights: 

Vadakkumnathan Temple is one of the largest and ancient Shiva temples, situated in Thrissur district of Kerala. Also known as Thenkailasam and Vrishabhachalam, the temple stands majestically on an elevated hillock right in the centre of the city. The temple attracts thousands of devotees every day. Hindu traditions say that the temple was built by Parasurama, the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu and the legend creator of Kerala. Thrissur pooram, which is celebrated here every year in the month of Medam (mid-April to mid-may), witness millions of devotees from all over the land.

Vadakkunnathan temple is surrounded by a massive stone wall enclosing an area of nearly 9 acres. Inside this fortification, there are four gopurams each facing north, south, east and west directions.The pillars are arranged in an interesting manner. Immediately to the left of the entrance is the theatre hall called ‘Kuttambalam'. It is a remarkably beautiful structure with elegant sloping roof of copper plates. Within this is staged the ancient dramatic art form of ‘Chakyar Kuttu'. Apart from these four gopurams, there is a multi-shrined complex in the centre with three principal shrines dedicated to Shiva as Vadakkunnathan, Shankaranarayana and Rama.

The ‘Sanctum' of the main shrine has a huge ‘Linga' of Shiva. This however, cannot be seen as it is covered by the traditional ‘Abhishekams' with ghee by devotees over the centuries. Over the Linga, generations of devotees have poured ghee by way of offering, which is never removed, has solidified into a pyramid.

The Harihara shrine, popularly called here as Shankaranarayana temple, is next to the main Shiva temple. This is also circular in plan and the tower has two tiers. On the other side is the shrine for Vishnu, is also similar to that of Harihara shrine. In addition, there are subsidiary shrines for Ganapathi, Dharma Shasta and also for Parasurama, of the very few of its kind in Kerala.

The temple of Vadakkunathan is noted for its grand annual Pooram festival in Medam (April-May) which attracts a large number of visitors and tourists from far and wide. A procession fo richly caparisoned elephants and magnificent display of fireworks mark the occasion. 

Thrissur has several other shrines which includes Paramekkavu Kshetram, Bhagavathi temple and Thiruvembadi temple.

Marari Beach

Marari is shortened from Mararikulam, a small& sleepy fishermans village. Marari beach is not far from Alleppey in Keraala. Highlights: 

Locats, 50 Km from Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of Kerala. The Beach has another name papanasam Beach. An important pilgrimage center of Hindu's. The devotees perform “Vavubali”, a ritual for the ancestors souls to rest in peace, on the new moon day of the Malayalam month Karkadakam.

The beach is surrounded by high rocky cliffs and coconut groves. There are two main cliffs gives added attraction to Varkala tourism. The cliffs are steep and rugged and are made of red brown stone. Visitors can engage in swimming, sunbathin, water sports like scuba diving, wind surfing etc.


Sree Janardhana Swamy Temple is located here in Varkala, dedicated to Lord Ayyappa and Hanuman.

Kannur Beach

Highlights:

Pathiramanal Beach: Locates 15 Km from Kannur. A long clean beach, excellent ambience for swimmers& gives perfect relaxation to visitors.

Muzhappilangad: Locates 15 Km from Kannur, is one of the longest beaches of Kerala. The Muzhapilangad beach is the only drive-in beach of India which makes it unique among all other beaches of Kerala. The 4 Km long stretch beach is an ideal place to laze around or go for drive.

The shores of the Muzhappilangad beach are lined with black rocks, which protects the shores from the lashing waves and also make a natural shallow place. Moppila Bay: A Natural fishing harbour located near St.Angelo's Fort. The sea wall extending to a huge height, projecting from the fort separates the rough sea and inland water. Mechanised and country crafts can enter into the island from the sea and anchor safely. The fort is a magnificent structure with massive walls and a deep moat. A mesmerizing view of the Moppila Bay never fails to enthrall visitors. The bay is a modern fishing harbor that is equipped with the latest technology.

Ezhimala beach: The beautiful beach here has a hillock nearby, 286 m high, locates 55 Km from Kannur. A Naval Academy is being developed here. Carved Stone Pillars, an ancient burial chamber& an ancient Cave are the other attractions of Ezhimala. The region is also quite famous for its medicinal herbs.

Dharmadam beach: Locates 17 Km from Kannur, a small island full of coconut palms and green bush extending to 5 acres. The island offers a beautiful sight view from the beach.

Veli Beach

Beypore Beach

Highlights:

Located at the mouth of the Chaliyar River in Calicut district. Beypore, believed to be one of the prominent ports and fishing harbours of ancient Kerala. Beypore was an important trade and maritime centre. Ancient Beypore was much sought after by merchants from Western Asia, for its ship building industry. The boat building yard, famous for its construction of Uru, the traditional Arabian trading vessel. 
The Beypore Beach has a bridge built nearly 2 Km into the sea. It is actually made up of huge stones piled together making a pathway into the Sea.
  
No design is drawn, and the plan of the Uru is conceptualized wholly in the mind of the master craftsmen. And log by log, each component comes together like a giant jigsaw puzzle and the final product is truly breathtaking. And to think that nothing was planned on paper, but the whole designing and intricate measurements and calculations were done entirely in the mind is truly astounding.

Bekal Beach

Highlights:

The Bekal Fort& the attached Beach has been a source of attraction for historians, tourists and nature - lovers. The Fort happens to be the biggest for Kerala spreading over forty acres and the Fort appears to have been built up from the seas. The Hanuman temple and the ancient Muslime Mosque nearly hold testimony to the age-old religious harmony that prevailed in the area. Kollam Backwater

Kollam was the epicenter of trade in Ancient times.  Kollam backwaters are famous for its variety fishes, coconuts and cashew nuts. The 144 ft. Thangassery Light house, built in 1902, is a centre of attraction in Kollam.
Rameshwara temple: The temple echoes a Pandyan influence and is decorated with Tamil inscriptions between the 12th and 16th centuries. The Vyala monster sculptures make you feel that the creatures in the temple are living beings.
Ashtamudi Lake: Kollam stands along Ashtamudi Lake and is a major attraction for its elegance and architectural beauty. Tourists can stay here at economical rates.
Ananda Valleeswaram Temple: The Ananda Valleeswaram Temple of Kollam attracts people on almost all days. There are several Churches and Mosques around Kollam.
